Algebraic Chess Notation Guide
Every square on the 64-square grid is identified by a unique letter (file a-h) and number (rank 1-8). Pieces are designated by capital letters: K (King), Q (Queen), R (Rook), B (Bishop), N (Knight). Pawns are indicated by their destination square without a letter (e.g., e4).
Chess Rating Systems Explained (ELO / FIDE)
Ratings measure playing strength based on results against rated opponents. Royal Knights tracks both national ELO and international FIDE benchmarks.

The Complete Beginner's Guide to Chess
Everything you need to know to play your first game.
1. Setting Up the Board
White on right. Rooks on corners, knights next to them, then bishops. Queen goes on her own color, King next to her.
2. How Pieces Move
Rooks move straight, bishops diagonal. Knights move in an L-shape. Queens can do both. Kings move one square any direction.
3. Special Moves
Castling protects the King. En passant allows a pawn to capture another pawn that moves two squares. Pawns reaching the end promote.
4. Check, Checkmate & Stalemate
Check means the King is under attack. Checkmate means the King is in check and cannot escape, ending the game.
5. Basic Opening Principles
Control the center squares with pawns. Develop your knights and bishops early. Castle quickly to keep your King safe.
6. Your First Game Checklist
Take your time. Always check if your pieces are safe before moving. Look for undefended pieces of your opponent.
